Mission Statement

The mission of the Office of the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel is to provide legal counsel to The University of Arizona, including The University of Arizona-South in Sierra Vista. We strive to provide, manage and coordinate timely and responsible legal advice about the broad array of legal issues that face a modern public research University. The Office of the General Counsel and its attorneys:

Analyze and advise University personnel on legal implications of policy and other decisions under applicable law, regulation and policies;

Represent the University in litigation matters, administrative proceedings, and significant transactions; and

Engage in various activities to prevent legal claims against The University of Arizona and the Arizona Board of Regents, including educational activities.

In so doing, it is our goal to assist in minimizing legal risks and costs, reduce litigation, and ensure legal compliance and thereby help the University achieve its mission. Recognizing that an integral part of the University's vision is to sustain a community that values every individual and continually strives to promote the equity and inclusiveness that are essential to our diversity and excellence, the Office of the General Counsel dedicates extensive effort toward achieving these goals.

In its advisory capacity, the Office serves and guides our campus community on diversity matters, and regularly provides individual and group training sessions on diversity-related issues campus-wide. Whether it presents trainings directly or partners with its colleagues here on campus or from the national community, the Office strives to bring an awareness of diversity issues to the forefront of our campus dialogue.
