Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel

Office of the General Counsel, The University of Arizona

The University of Arizona, on behalf of the Arizona Board of Regents, is accepting applications for the Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel position at The University of Arizona.

The Vice President for Legal Affairs and General Counsel is the chief legal officer of The University of Arizona, a member of the President's cabinet who reports directly to the President, and is a member of the UA's senior leadership team. The General Counsel is responsible for providing advice and support to the President, the Arizona Board of Regents, and the administration of the University on business, legal, and public policy issues. He or she is responsible for a wide range of legal issues including those related to institutional governance, intellectual property and licensing, research contracts and compliance, international transactions, employment matters, charitable giving, student-related issues, real estate, taxation, government regulations, and overseeing litigation.

The selected candidate will also provide sound leadership to a team of 17, including nine attorneys and professional support staff.

Qualifications include a J.D. or L.L.B. from an accredited U.S. law school and 10+ years of broad legal experience. The successful candidate must be admitted to practice in Arizona or be eligible for admission and be admitted within one year of employment. [Note: Arizona recently adopted a rule enabling qualified attorneys in reciprocating jurisdictions to gain admission to the Arizona State Bar without having to take the Arizona bar examination. See Rule 38(h), Rules of Arizona Supreme Court, effective January 1, 2010.]

Additional requirements are outstanding judgment and superior communication, analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and consensus-building skills. The ability to build strong relationships within and outside of the University is essential. Keen sensitivity to context and differing stakeholder objectives; the ability to internalize and give meaningful advice within different client cultures; and an outstanding ability to translate and build bridges for different stakeholders are important.

Experience managing a law office and advising senior officers and governing boards or regents, a history of successful complex transactions and litigation, exceptional academic and professional credentials, a collaborative and client-enabling approach to legal advising, and familiarity with a complex higher education or large nonprofit environment will make candidates especially competitive.
